Summertime on South Lake in the Aspendells

DSC_8222-Edit.jpg

The Aspendells are just west of the town of Bishop California. This small town and its associated lakes and trails are known for some of California’s finest fall colors especially among their name sake’s, the aspen trees. During the fall these color range from light green to brilliant yellows, golds, and oranges. Who knew California had such amazing colors! South Lake is one of three lakes easily accessible from the road without hiking. Kayaking and fishing are popular sports here. We found that renting a Kayak is one of the best ways to see all the beauty of the lake and and the mountains around it. The water is so clear and blue! Have you even been to California for the fall colors? Comment below and let me know what you thought!

The Winding Roads around Lake Crowley

DSCF9642-Edit.jpg

Owen’s Gorge is a deep desert gorge that the Owen’s River flows through after leaving Lake Crowley. While Owen’s Gorge Road doesn’t offer many great views of this gorge on its own, it does offer the chance to get some amazing views. In that valley off in the distance in Convict Lake with Mt Morrison rising up on the left. To the right is the end of Lake Crowley which is a man made reservoir for LA. The road stretches in front of me leading to the next adventure. Where is your next adventure taking you?

Midnight over Morrison Peak

DSC_6462.jpg

Some people say that you can’t see the milky way when the moon is out, especially if it is a full moon. It certainly isn’t as crisp and clear but with a good lens, and nice camera, and a little luck one can still find our galaxy even when the landscape is being lit up like day by a bright moon. I got this shot at an undisclosed location near Mammoth Lakes California and can’t wait to come back here to shoot the Milky Way again when the moon isn’t so bright and the stars can shine to their full potential. The High Sierras make such a perfect backdrop for the galaxy don’t they?

Winter in the Picturesque June Lake

DSC_7354-Edit.jpg

Winter is Coming! I actually took this shot in the daytime during a brief snowstorm at one of the best places to watch fall colors in California. June Lake is a small resort town of about 500 people nestled 7000 feet above sea level in the Sierra Nevada Easter Range. Snow in September is not uncommon at this altitude. The colors were beautiful and so was the scene but I wanted to add a little fun touch so I used photoshop to create a nighttime feel with lit street lamps and windows shining into the night. What do you think? How can I improve my skills? What could I have done better?

Awesome Airbnb Travel Deal!!

If you follow my blog you know that I am always looking for the best travel deals. I love traveling well (not 5-star but not bunk beds in hostels either) and Airbnb is one of the best sites I know for doing that. I’ve take 8 trips in the last 12 months with Airbnb.

Yesterday I was doing some shopping on Ebay when I stumbled upon this great deal: Buy a $110 Airbnb Gift card for only $100! I went ahead and bought one but am thinking about buying several more since its basically a 10% discount for free! I’m not sure when the sale ends but I wanted to pass it along.

If you have never used Airbnb, its basically rooms or entire houses that people rent out to travelers. So you can stay in a comfortable homey environment instead of a hotel for a price that is normally much better than hotel. I use it a lot for groups of people when we all want to stay together but need a lot of room. If you’ve never used it before use my link for and extra $40 credit on your account for your first booking!!!

Garnett Lake and the JMT

DSC_8872.jpg

Banner Peak looms 12,942 feet over the beautiful island filled Garnet Lake, little brother to the more famous Thousand Island Lake. Numerous small glaciers decorate the sides of this beautiful mountain (which can apparently be climbed by a least one class 2 route…hmm next adventure?). Thousand Island Lake can be most easily reached by the 7.8 mile gently sloping River Trail from Agnew Meadows. However, I had the bright idea that we should return via the JMT to Shadow Lake route. While the maps indicated this was a bit longer they in no way prepared us for the innumerable painful switchbacks, ups and downs, and much rougher terrain of this particular detour. The trail tops out at 10k above sea level and with most of it is above 8k that altitude definitely gets to you! The return ended up being about 10.6 miles down the JMT to Shadow Lake and back to Agnew Meadows. However, we still managed the 18.4 mile loop in 7.5 hours (a record pace for us I think). A soak in a hot springs afterward and another one the next morning helped ease our sore muscles. Ediza and Iceberg Lakes are next on my list. Who has hiked this area?

First Snow of 2017

_DSC0905.jpg

Watching the storm role in. Snow transforms everything, turning dry dusty ground into a white winter wonderland. Snow allows the almost desert like conditions of the Eastern Sierras to thrive with life, Aspens and Evergreens, Wildflower and Wild Berries. While California certainly does have some beautiful mountains all year long, I think that snow really puts the finishing touches on them and brings them to the level of some of the more lush mountain ranges to the north. Can’t wait till more snow falls here…maybe be out in it, maybe get stuck on the wrong side of a closed pass again as I did last fall during the first snow (that I recall) when I took this photo of my friend shooting near June Lake. What’s your favorite thing about winter?
