What do you want to know about HAWAII?

I just got back from an amazing nine nights in Hawaii (five on Oahu, and four on the Big Island). It was an epic adventure full of hiking, snorkeling, staying up too late and getting up too early, kayaking, and swimming. I think this trip taught me a lot about travel and was definitely an eye opener for what Hawaii is really like. Even though I prepared and researched significantly, there was much that the blogs, articles, and Instagram posts, I went through did not cover. This seems to be a common theme in my travels: you go somewhere very popular that you would expect to be well covered in the blog world, but you find that many of the things you wish you had known are no covered at all. So let me ask you: what would you like to know about Hawaii? How can I help you plan a trip there?

Watching Lake Sabrina Freeze

The ice was blue. The umbrella red. My new favorite prop. I know it’s been done many times before but I haven’t seen a lot lately. Yellow raincoats can only be beat by red umbrellas. Self portrait at Lake Sabrina about a month ago. I’ve been here a couple times but my favorite was this visit with the lake starting to freeze and no people or boats around. This lake is located up past Aspendell outside of Bishop California. To get here you must walk up a 2 mile closed road (but its not a bad hike at all).

This is a self portrait by the way. Any tips on capturing awesome photos of yourself when it’s just you and the camera?

My new website is live!

I’ve been working on putting together a real portfolio, with prints available, showcasing my favorite shots from around the world. Its an on going work on progress, but I decided to go ahead and make it live so you guys can check it out. Let me know what you think and how I can improve. If you really love some of my photos, feel free to buy some prints. I’ve kept the prices super reasonable (small prints for just $1!). I’d rather more people be able to enjoy my work than to make a ton of profit right away.  Below are a sample of some of the photos I’ve put up on my page

Favorite Hot Springs?

Shepherd hot springs all to myself. Have you guys ever been to the Easter Sierra? The Sierras are a diverse, beautiful mountain range in California. Their name (Sierra Nevada) means “snowy mountains” and is aptly named most of the time (this year’s been a bit slow with that snow but above 10,000 feet there is a good amount). Tectonic plate movement, volcanic activity, and historic glaciers created these beauties. Beyond them stretch their sister mountain range the White Mountains (seen in this photo). Between these two great ranges are countless natural hot springs. Most are free and open to the public. Some, like this one, have man assisted pools which enable peaceful soaking all year long. I was lucky to have this one all to myself for an hour or so. What’s your favorite hot springs in California?

Have you ever hiked up a mountain like this?

Sequoia National Park is full of surprises. Just this month I hiked up to a fire lookout that was beautifully situated on a huge rock. I’d never even heard of this place before! Here we are hiking up the magnificent Moro Rock to catch a stunning sunset. Have you ever hiked up such a climb before right up the cliff? Check out my YouTube channel for more adventures.

Have you ever seen bucks fighting in a field?

The valley of Yosemite was teaming with life this past fall. There were so many bucks trying to claim their territory that many broke out in fighting. It was quite enjoyable to be able to watch this display of natural strength in front of us knowing that we both respected each other. The animals did not live in fear of the humans as we gave them space and they are not hunted in the valley. Which buck do you think will end up winning dominance this season?

Have you ever taken a walk through the ferns

Montgomery Woods is a lesser known redwood forest that is equally beautiful. The lush green forest floor is full of ferns and moss which make a green carpet often rising as high as my head. Towering 200-300 feet above are the magnificent coastal redwoods. What a beautiful site.

This is my introductory video to my relatively new YouTube channel. I will be posting several times a week. The videos are not really a vlog but rather short clips to show the places I hike to and adventure around. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them! What would you like to see me film more of?

He won’t attack us will he?!?

After seeing the bear several people began asking if it would attack us. No one really knew so we kept on hiking. He kept on looking for grubs. And we were all happy. But I will say: be sure you don’t feed bears. This makes them more comfortable around humans and makes them think of us as a food source which can ultimately lead to them attacking humans. The best thing is to enjoy them from a safe distance and given them space.

We almost got Eaten by a bear!

While hiking in King’s Canyon last summer, we came across this young black bear foraging for grubs and berries. He came right up close to us! We didn’t want to run as to cause him to think we were prey, but we did want to keep a safe distance. He didn’t seem to mind us at all and kept about his business before walking away into the forest. Very cool and just a bit scary.
